The holidays are almost here and law firms around the world will be throwing big, lavish parties with even larger price tags. While big law is notorious for extravagant holiday celebrations, small and medium sized practices are working with slightly less generous budgets. No worries though. You can still provide your staff members and/or clients with great holiday festivities, without breaking the proverbial bank.

Focus on Giving

Instead of throwing a huge holiday celebration, why not focus your efforts on giving back to the community in which you practice law. Adopt a family in need and provide them with food and gifts for the holidays. Plan a gift wrapping session within the office, with finger foods and baked desserts. You could even plan a small get together where the family is presented with their presents. It may seem like a small gesture, but it can go a long way in the lives of people in need and in the hearts of your staff members.

Let’s do Lunch

A holiday celebration doesn’t have to involve a nighttime shindig at a fancy hotel. Why not take the entire office out for a nice lunch, or bring a catered meal right in the conference room? Not only is this a more cost-effective option, but it also provides a short break from the duties of the office. Now, you know your staff better than I do. Maybe you have a pizza and beer type of gang, or maybe a more formal choice of cuisine is more appropriate. Whatever you decide to do, I’m sure your attorneys and support staff will appreciate the gesture.

Collaboration

Is there another small practice in your town? Perhaps someone you work with on cases from time to time? Why not bring that collaboration to the dance floor with a joint holiday party? You can split the costs, while still providing your staff members with a great celebration.

Crash the Bar’s Party

If you are a very small office, how about turning one of the Bar holiday parties into your own. Most state and local bar associations or committees sponsor a holiday party. Try to finagle an extra couple of tickets for your associate attorney and hardworking paralegal. That way, you can all enjoy the fun of a holiday celebration without the huge expense.

Put That Money to Work

Turn that holiday celebration into a marketing tool by inviting former and current clients. Cater a lunch and invite them to partake in the tasty dishes. This laid back environment gives you an opportunity to reconnect with clients who may have some new legal needs and better serve your current clients. Who knows… you may walk away with enough new business that the party practically pays for itself.

The holidays are good when you can find a way to celebrate them, without going broke. Try some of these options to make this holiday season a festive one.
